Hi,

I came across one of these MGM star door numbers in an antique store a few years ago. You can see the hole where the peephole is passed through, so I believe it to be from an MGM hotel. Also, it is very heavy. I've been trying to date these and get an idea of where they were used. I came across a second one in an antique store in Connecticut and purchased it, well because I think it's cool. However, I'd really like to find more information about it.

I've scoured the internet for photos but have only come up with one picture which I've attached. It is from an article about the MGM Grand 1980 fire by the Las Vegas Sun and the image shows a star, which I think is identical to mine, on one of the doors.  I've written to the Las Vegas Sun a number of times on their website and have never gotten a response. Does anyone have any idea where I might be able to find more information about these?

I did come across one listed on eBay and wrote to the person selling asking how they dated it, since they gave an indication that it came from the MGM in Las Vegas around the time of the fire. However, I never heard back. They were selling theirs for $12,000+ which I thought a bit high since I didn't pay nearly that much. However, on the flip side of that, I have never seen any others except for the 2 I have and that one on eBay. Ironically, I didn't even notice, but the two that I have, purchased 2700 miles apart, are only 3 rooms apart which I thought was really cool.

Any guidance or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

the MGM grand, the original one, opened 12/05/73 and closed in 1986. You can see photos of another "room star" here. When it became Ballys these were slowly removed, but some were still there until the very late 1980s

so hope this helps
