Well, someone thinks they're fancy. This chip has a book value of $200-$249 and they're asking $15k for it. He's either going to be a very happy seller or get smart and start much lower.

Asking price is not selling price and some people have extreme imaginations. Go look at Etsy for rare coins which are either nothing unusual, misidentified or some road kill that someone is trying to sell as rare error coin.
No one pays those prices, not on eBay or anywhere. I never could understand who was so delusional that they think their item is going to get some collector who's very wealthy and very stupid, to leap at the chip. I mean, really?
Although I do have a bridge in Brooklyn that's a real bargain.
it is usually done when the seller has a "make an offer" button too, as this seller does. The high number is so that it will be at the top of the list when people do a sort by price on ebay. It is also a bit of "I don't know what the market is, so why don't you tell me"
all it does for me is keep me away...

I always wondered about that. I see things that someone could buy for $19.99 (not just chips I mean common items that are mass produced) and then someone will have it for $199.99. I thought it was an error at first, but then I see it's one of those, renew until sold.
There's some sort of game going on. Maybe to raise the average price? Maybe to make something look more valuable? I suppose, highest price first, would get views, but who's so stupid that they don't check and see it's the same as every other "Junk-O-Matic" from dozens of other people? I considered some trick to launder money?
Yes, we all see outrageous RARE items that aren't and I think you're right. People don't know what they have and they heard that Casino Chips are collectible, so they just shoot for the Moon. :)
For antiques, I know people who think their stuff is worth much more, and read book prices as value. Then they list and get angry when nothing sells. If the price is realistic, and even if it's low, the market will decide the real worth. ANd that assumes that people are looking and se th auction. I've missed auctions, where something I wanted, went for something half of what I would have bid. That's my fault, and that's the other side of the rick for a seller who lists things low.
Well, I'm that seller. I usually start chips, well below what I think they should be. If I get more tan one person bidding, I start to think, there's a message... that's the real value.
